Balance: self & others
Speaker: Paul Brown
Notes
Think of someone who is totally focused on the needs of others; and
someone who seems concerned only for their own well-being. We need to do both
in a balanced way.
Jesus focused on others - his whole life was for the purpose of God's
glory and man's salvation. He seems to have gone from one teaching or healing
straight to the next (e.g. Matt 8) and taught those around him to be more
concerned for others than themselves (Matt 19:16,21, Matt 6:33, Matt 28:19)
But he also made sure he looked after himself, by taking time alone, with
just his disciples, in prayer, etc: Matt 4:1, 8:18, 13:1, 14:13&23, 15:21,
24:3, 26:36.
Ways in which we can look after ourselves:
-
Spiritual disciplines
-
Relationship with God
-
Time aside for yourself, your family, etc
-
Know what it is that refreshes you
-
Learn to say No
-
Exercise, sleep, eat well
Embrace both ends of the spectrum and don't judge others who have found a
slightly different balance.
Application
Think of someone who is totally focused on the needs of others; and
someone who seems concerned only for their own well-being. Towards which end
of the spectrum do you naturally tend to sit?
Make a list of ways in which the group, between you, help to meet the
needs of others. You might find it easier to answer for one another. Can you
think of other ways in which you could (individually, as a group, as a church)
"seek first his kingdom and his righteousness" (Matt 6:33)?
What would you like to be remembered for having achieved?
What are the activities / places / environments that help you to
"recharge your spiritual batteries"? Do you have a regular pattern of time for
yourself and your loved ones or does it just get fitted in as and when?
Anyone needing to say No more often? Or needing to say Yes!?
In pairs, share one area you feel you want to grow in, and pray for one
another.
