Proverbs: the power of words

Speaker: Ruth Brown

Notes

"Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never harm me" - this is not true! Words are powerful and can cause hurts that are harder to heal than a broken bone. They can also do lots of good. So be careful what you say - you may have to eat it (Prov 18:21)!

Proverbs warns us...

  • Use few words (10:19, 17:27)

  • Don't be hasty (29:20)

  • Be careful what you say (13:3)

  • Consider timing (15:23, 25:11)

James talks about taming the tongue (James 3:18)

Jesus says that how we speak reveals what we are really like and that we will have to give account for every careless word (Matt 12:33-36)

Application

Were there any of the Proverbs verses on Sunday that particularly struck you? Share an example of when a timely word spoken to you has changed things for the better.

Pray for one another that the power of any negative words or curses from the past would be broken. Ask the Holy Spirit to use our words to bring life to others.
