Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

Prophecy and miracles

Speaker: Simon Matthews

Notes

1 Corinthians 12:7-11. Stir up the gifts of the Holy Spirit especially the prophetic and working of miracles.

Two kinds of prophecy - "twittering" (keeping in touch with God, good encouraging general communication) and significant directive intervention which changes lives and even nations. Our churches and our nation need a fresh flow of God's life-changing word to us. Let's reach out to God for it.

As well as God's word, we need his intervention. Don't live entirely on your own ability and resources but step out and believe God for the impossible. Expect miracles when you pray (James 4:2). Deal with disappointment and disillusionment.

Application

Share some examples of prophetic words that have made a difference to your life.

In your experience, how does God's prophetic word come and how do you tell the difference between it and your own thoughts or feelings?

Paul tells Timothy to stir up the gift of God that is in him - do we all have the gift and what can we do to stir it up?

If you pray for a miracle you may or may not get one. If you don't pray you almost certainly won't get one. True or false? Discuss!

Are you willing to be used by God to bring prophecies or miracles to others? What might get in the way to stop us?
