Values

Speaker: Ruth Brown

Notes

Values are principles that guide our decisions and actions. Beliefs lead to values which lead to behaviour. We each have personal values and together we have corporate values.

Corporate values shape the way we do things here. They create distinctiveness.

We have identified the top six corporate values of TLC as AFLAME:

  • Anchored in the Bible (2 Tim 3:16) It's the foundation for everything we are and do

  • Family-friendly (John 13:34-35) We are God's family, we desire strong relationships, we welcome and included all generations

  • Living to worship (Rom 12:1) All of life should be an act of worship

  • Attentive to the Spirit (Gal 5:25) Being led by the Holy Spirit and staying in step

  • Mission-minded (Matt 28:19) By all relevant means taking the gospel to our neighbours, our nation and the world

  • Equipping every member (Eph 4:12-13) Everyone has a part to play. Everyone growing, being equipped, trained, released and empowered to fulfil God's call

Application

Tray Game (idea by Jo)

Collect about a dozen objects that relate to the values, such as a Bible, a family photo, a small instrument, ear-phones, a passport, a tool. Without telling people the connection, arrange them all on a tray, let people look for a minute, secretly remove one and then see if they can spot what's missing.

Talk about how the objects relate to the values, then play the game again and see if it's easier to spot them now they have the connections.

Discussion

In small groups, take one of the values and look up the Scripture. Find other Scriptures that relate. Draw a picture to illustrate the value. How is this value worked out practically in TLC? Is it something that comes naturally to you or something you struggle with? Pray for one another, for your group and for the church to be strengthened in this value. If time permits, move onto another of the values. You may want to mix up the small groups.
