True worship
Speaker: Matthew Hall
Notes
Worship is inevitable, we all will worship. God created mankind to be in relationship with Him and to worship Him. True worship is toward God, all other forms of worship are empty imitations.
A definition of worship:
-
It comes from the heart [Matthew 6 :21]
-
It honors the subject [Matthew 15: 8-9]
-
It involves sacrifice [2 Kings 17:35-36, Romans 12:1]
-
It is a form of total service [Exodus 20:5, Romans 12:1]
Because we all mankind yearns to be in a relationship with God (it's just that some don't know it) we are all on a journey to find true satisfaction.
[Isaiah 55:2] If we are all longing for true satisfaction (that will ultimately lead us to worship the thing that we believe will bring satisfaction), but only God will satisfy, then, unless you have God-centered worship you will live a life of turmoil, continually empty and hunting for the next thing to worship.
Matthew 6 :21 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Proverbs 4:23 - Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.
So if what you treasure (worship) is where your heart is and your heart is the wellspring (fountain) life. Then what people will see throughout your life will be an outpouring of what you truly cherish and treasure (worship). Therefore all of life is a reflection of what you worship, either God, or something else.
Application
What do you think worship means? Do you have any preconceptions of what worship is because of labels, such as Worship Team?
Using the definition, ask yourself the question "what do I worship?" Are there any areas in your life that you need to give to God?
