Studying God's word

Speaker: Matt Hails

Notes

In studying God's Word, we are aiming for the following results in our lives (and more...):

  1. Knowing God. John 20:31; Romans 10:17; 2 Tim 3:15

  2. Solid foundations. 1 Tim 3:9; 2 Tim 2:15

  3. Thoroughly equipped. 2 Tim 3:16 - 17

  4. Able to teach. 2 Tim 3:16

When you study:

  1. Ask the Holy Spirit for help. John 14:26; Psalm 119:18. Inspired writing needs inspired reading

  2. Aim to interpret well

  3. Look for the Big Picture and Key Ideas. (Book plug: "How to Read the Bible" by David Chan, ISBN 981-04-0077-2)

  4. Do what it says. James 1:22

Some practical advice:

  1. Make time + space for study

  2. Learn good principles for interpreting the Bible

  3. Study passage yourself first

  4. Consult commentaries + other study aids later

  5. Write down your discoveries and keep for later

  6. There are different seasons in life for study - make the most of time you have

  7. Try different things - read whole Bible, study individual books, topics; don't just read the bits you like

Resources:

  1. Use different Bible translations

  2. A must read for all Christians (in my opinion!): "How to Read the Bible for all its worth" by Gordon D.Fee and Douglas Stuart, ISBN 0-86201-195-7 (e.g. from Wesley Owen)

  3. Daily study guide, e.g. "Search the Scriptures" edited by Alan M. Stibbs, ISBN 0-85110-718-4 (e.g. from Wesley Owen)

  4. Concordance

  5. Bible dictionary

  6. Bible handbook (e.g. Lion handbook to the Bible)

  7. Commentaries

  8. Theology works

  9. Many computer-based Bible resources, on+off line. E.g. Bible Gateway and Blue Letter Bible

Application

  1. Why do you read/study the Bible? (Assuming you do!)

  2. How has studying the Bible affected your life?

  3. Do you study the Bible regularly?

  4. What works well for you in terms of finding time and space for Bible study?

  5. What are your favourite Bible study aids / resources?

  6. Would you like to study the Bible more (frequently / for longer) than you do currently? Is there anything that would help you do so? Try and think of one thing that would help you to fulfil your aims here, and determine to act on it. Pray for each other to succeed in this.
