Discipline of Prayer

Speaker: Colin Boyd

Notes

Opening comments:

  • Prayer involved in my niece's healing.

  • Desire to pray needs to come before discipline.

  • Keep on watch for what God is doing. The encouragement of answered prayer.

  • Discipline will protect those times when God works on a different time scale to yours.

  • Prayer taps into God's resources, so be prepared to be surprised. Major statement: TRUST ME IN THIS.

Why desire to pray?

  • Do you want to see change - on God's terms?

  • Do you want to know your part in it?

  • Do you want the strength to take up that part?

  • Do you realise your limits, and will you admit it?

Ideas on the Discipline of praying:

  • Time apart with God.

  • Time with someone else.

  • Privacy and value of non-interruption/distraction.

  • Regular prayer time; why not first thing?

  • Pray on bad days as well as good.

  • Thank-you prayers with whole family.

  • Instant prayers and the discipline of prayer as first priority.

New Testament examples of prayer disciplines:

  • Matthew 5:44 Prayer for those you dislike.

  • Mark 11:25 Forgiveness prayers

  • Matthew 6:5-7 Keep to the point and don't follow a formula.

  • Matthew 14:23, Mark 1:35, Luke 5:16, Luke 6:12 Jesus' discipline of one-to-one prayer away from distraction.

  • Acts 12 Disciplines of intercessory prayer and corporate prayer.

Application

Have a group "Thank-you" prayer session.

Share with each other your own prayer disciplines. Don't be afraid to bring out any personal difficulties - you are all in different circumstances.

How do/did you train your children in prayer discipline/habits? Were you ever trained as a child?

Choose a situation that is happening NOW and go straight for it in prayer. (First priority discipline!)

Decide upon an intercession prayer target for the whole group to focus on this week.
